Learning from an Experienced HR Professional: Reflection on My Zoom Session with Ashneel Reddy

I attended a Zoom meeting with Ashneel Reddy, a retired Human Resources professional who previously worked at a university in Seattle. This session was both inspiring and practical, as he shared real-life insights from his long career in HR and provided valuable advice on the soft skills that truly shape professional success. The conversation helped me clearly understand what employers look for beyond technical knowledge and how I can prepare myself for my future career. One of the most important lessons Ashneel emphasized was the power of clear communication. What I Learned from My Career Zoom Meeting with Enrique

I joined a Zoom meeting with Enrique from Neil Squire, who works as a Job Developer. This meeting was very helpful for me because I am an international student, and finding a job in Canada is new and sometimes confusing. Enrique explained many important things about resumes, interviews, and job searching in Canada. One of the main things I learned was the idea of transferable skills . He told me that experience from my home country still counts in Canada. For example, I worked in customer service before, and now I also meet customers at my part-time job in Canada. He said customer service, communication, being polite, problem-solving, and staying calm under pressure are skills that many Canadian employers want, even in banks. This made me feel more confident because I used to think only Canadian experience was important. He also shared his own story . When he came to Canada, he worked in a seasonal furniture store for three months. After that, the company liked his attitude and team...

Both of them are Capilano University alumni who completed the same NABU program that I’m studying now. It was a friendly and warm visit, filled with light, food, and laughter. But beyond the celebration, this small gathering turned into one of the most valuable learning experiences for my career preparation. During our conversation, I asked them about their journey after graduation and how they managed to find work in Canada as international students. They both shared honest stories about their struggles and progress — from doing part-time jobs to finally finding professional roles in offices and financial institutions. One of them mentioned that in her practicum, the biggest challenge was communication — not grammar, but understanding workplace culture and the way Canadians express ideas politely and professionally. She said learning to ask questions confi...
