What I Learned from My Career Zoom Meeting with Enrique
I joined a Zoom meeting with Enrique from Neil Squire, who works as a Job Developer. This meeting was very helpful for me because I am an international student, and finding a job in Canada is new and sometimes confusing. Enrique explained many important things about resumes, interviews, and job searching in Canada.
One of the main things I learned was the idea of transferable skills. He told me that experience from my home country still counts in Canada. For example, I worked in customer service before, and now I also meet customers at my part-time job in Canada. He said customer service, communication, being polite, problem-solving, and staying calm under pressure are skills that many Canadian employers want, even in banks. This made me feel more confident because I used to think only Canadian experience was important.
He also shared his own story. When he came to Canada, he worked in a seasonal furniture store for three months. After that, the company liked his attitude and teamwork, so they offered him a part-tim
e job. Later, he became full-time. After more time, a customer service position opened in the office and they gave him that job. This showed me that in Canada, if you work hard and show a good attitude, opportunities will come.He also gave me advice about resumes and interviews. He told me to use short bullet points with action verbs like “served,” “helped,” “organized,” or “solved.” He told me to add numbers to show results, like “Served more than 100 customers a day at the store.” He also said a cover letter should explain why I am the best candidate, not just repeat my resume.
For interviews, he told me to be myself, be honest, dress professionally, and always research the company. If I don’t know the answer to a question, I can say, “That is a good question. I am not sure, but I am willing to learn.” He also said to ask questions at the end, such as “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”
This activity connects to my career goals because I want to work in customer service or banking in the future. Now I know how to improve my resume and how to prepare for interviews. I will update my resume, practice common interview questions, and start applying for jobs with more confidence.
Overall, the meeting with Enrique taught me real things I can use in my job search. It made me feel more positive and prepared for the future.
