Learning from an Experienced HR Professional: Reflection on My Zoom Session with Ashneel Reddy
I attended a Zoom meeting with Ashneel Reddy, a retired Human Resources professional who previously worked at a university in Seattle. This session was both inspiring and practical, as he shared real-life insights from his long career in HR and provided valuable advice on the soft skills that truly shape professional success. The conversation helped me clearly understand what employers look for beyond technical knowledge and how I can prepare myself for my future career.
One of the most important lessons Ashneel emphasized was the power of clear communication. He explained that being able to express ideas confidently, listen actively, and respond with clarity can prevent misunderstandings and build strong workplace relationships. This directly connects to my career goals, as I aim to work in a professional environment where teamwork and collaboration are essential. Strong communication is not just about speaking well, but also about understanding others and showing empathy, which he highlighted as a key trait of successful HR professionals.
Another powerful takeaway was his advice to “never say no” and always remain eager to learn. He encouraged us to approach every opportunity with curiosity and openness, even if it feels challenging or unfamiliar. According to him, growth happens when we step out of our comfort zones. This aligns closely with my own journey, as I am trying to develop myself professionally and become more adaptable in different work situations. Being eager to learn allows me to stay relevant and continuously improve my skills.
Ashneel also spoke about the importance of taking initiative and becoming a problem solver. Instead of waiting for instructions, he encouraged us to identify issues and propose solutions proactively. He explained that employees who take initiative stand out because they add value to the organization rather than just completing tasks. This insight motivated me to shift my mindset from simply doing what is required to thinking more strategically about how I can contribute.
Additionally, he reminded us never to miss a chance to learn, whether through feedback, observation, or new challenges. Every interaction can be a lesson if we choose to see it that way. This perspective inspired me to view failures and mistakes as part of the learning process rather than setbacks.
Overall, this session reinforced the importance of soft skills such as communication, adaptability, initiative, and problem-solving in achieving long-term career success. Ashneel Reddy’s guidance gave me a clearer direction on how to develop myself professionally and prepared me to approach my future career with confidence, curiosity, and a growth mindset.
